A New Vision for Application and Desktop Virtualization

Written by Technologent | March 7, 2016

In our last post, we explained how the new VMware Workspace ONE solution combines enterprise mobility management, desktop virtualization and identity management to give mobile users simple access to business-critical resources. VMware is further enhancing its application and desktop virtualization capabilities with the new VMware Horizon 7 and Horizon Air with Hybrid-mode solutions.

VMware Horizon 7 is designed to accelerate provisioning and delivery of virtual applications and desktops with the choice of onsite, cloud and hybrid deployment models. Built upon VMware Instant Clone Technology, Horizon 7 will enable organizations to provision 2000 personalized desktops in less than 20 minutes, and deliver non-persistent desktops and applications on demand.

Real-time, policy-based access controls with contextual and role-based management capabilities will enhance the security of virtual desktops. VMware Horizon 7 will be also integrated and available through VMware Workspace ONE to support organizations that need to manage mobile device access. In addition, mobile users will gain easy access to their desktops with single sign-on capabilities provided by VMware Identity Manager.

The new VMware App Volumes 3.0 will simplify the creation, deployment and management of applications. Unlike other technologies that require management of each application layer, App Volumes 3.0 provides the benefits of application layering while enabling management at an application level. Key capabilities include automation, monitoring, integrated end-user management and unified administration. Together, these features will enable faster, more flexible application delivery while reducing storage and operational costs by up to 70 percent.

VMware Horizon Air with Hybrid-mode is a new cloud-scale architecture combining the economic benefits of cloud-based VMware technology with the simplicity of hyper-converged infrastructure. It will represent a new approach to building, delivering and managing virtual workspaces, offering customers the choice of a full cloud-hosted or hybrid service. Benefits include simple out-of-the-box setup, rapid provisioning and delivery, and seamless software updates.

VMware Horizon Air with Hybrid-mode will consist of two main components: a unified Cloud-Control Plane and Horizon Node technology. The Cloud Control Plane is a cloud-based management layer hosted on VMware vCloud Air that will provide a single view to manage and deliver new hyper-converged infrastructure and Virtual SAN Ready Nodes. The Horizon Node technology will provide intelligent orchestration, delivery and management of workloads running on the hyper-converged infrastructure.

Adoption of application and desktop virtualization has doubled in the past four years, according to a new report by Research and Markets. Key drivers include reduced IT management costs, enhanced security and improved IT availability. VMware’s innovations will help to transform application and desktop virtualization for today’s mobile and cloud environment.

Nevertheless, deployment remains a complex undertaking that requires careful planning and execution.
