The accelerated shift to work-from-home models has enabled organizations to sustain their operations amid pandemic-related shutdowns. At the same time, it has put increased strain on IT teams. As organizations plan to extend remote and flexible work options into the future, they need to develop a plan for ensuring adequate IT resources.

In a recent survey conducted by Wakefield Research, 69 percent of business leaders said their organizations were unprepared to support wide-scale remote work at the beginning of the pandemic. By June 2020, however, 95 percent said they felt comfortable with remote work from a technology perspective.

Nevertheless, 94 percent reported technology performance problems that impacted the business — in fact, technology issues represented the biggest barrier to remote work performance. Productivity losses (37 percent), increased stress (36 percent), lack of motivation (34 percent), and challenges engaging with customers (34 percent) were the most commonly reported issues.

Technologent’s Resource Consulting services can help relieve the pressure caused by remote work technology issues. From technical support and software development to C-level executive consulting, Technologent ensures that organizations have the right skills to maximize efficiency, customer service and the user experience.

Remote Work Leads to IT Burnout

IT teams have borne the bulk of the responsibility for the transition to remote work. As the pandemic dragged on, however, many admit to struggling under the weight of an increased workload and suffering from extreme stress and burnout.

The technologies that performed well for a small number of remote workers can break down under large scale, sustained use. Many work-from-home employees still lack reliable tools, and security threats have only escalated.

In a recent survey by Electric, more than 70 percent of IT workers said they are putting in longer hours now than before the pandemic. Another 72 percent said their workload has increased or they have taken on additional responsibility. Almost two-thirds (62 percent) said the volume of support tickets has grown since the onset of the pandemic.

Although a majority of tickets were opened by end-users, almost 30 percent involved alerts and software updates and nearly 17 percent were related to security issues. A large number of tickets were also related to routine server and virtual workstation maintenance and support.

How Technologent Can Help

These issues aren’t expected to subside anytime soon, as a majority of organizations plan to adopt a hybrid approach in which employees split their time between remote work and a physical office location. In the Wakefield Research study, business leaders said they expect that 25 percent of employees will continue to work remotely after the pandemic has abated — an almost 50 percent increase over pre-pandemic numbers.
